The Ackersons have retained old employees and will be actively involved in store operations, Lisa said. “We contact people and say, ‘What did you do with the Frugal Frigate?”‘ she said. Lisa Ackerson said she wants to continue relationships with customers, schools and organizations. “I have students come up and say, ‘My mother used to take me to your storytimes,”‘ she said. Thomerson, who sold the Frugal Frigate to Brad Hundman in 2005, said she still uses children’s books in her classes. “You could walk in on a Tuesday morning and see 30 students and teachers,” said Thomerson, who said classes from nearby elementary schools would walk to the store. Thomerson and her staff held book parties, hosted authors and illustrators and invited classes to come for storytimes. “It has a really soulful history,” she said. She also created a section called “A Room of Her Own,” a space within the store devoted to women’s literature. Thomerson started with a 700-square-foot “corner” and expanded to 2,200 square feet in the 16½ years she owned the store. “We want to continue the legacy of the Frugal Frigate,” Lisa said.
